A foreign national who intends to settle in Italy, and the foreign family member of an Italian citizen, must obtain the residence document prescribed by law. Tramite Italia assists the applicant in identifying the correct document, in preparing the application and in dealings with the Sportello Unico (single immigration desk), the Questura (police headquarters) and the town hall.
Renewal of the residence permit. Since 22 May 2026 renewal must be applied for at least 90 days before expiry; issue, renewal or conversion must take place within 90 days of the application (Legislative Decree 83/2026).
Family reunification. Reunification with a spouse, disabled adult children and parents requires uninterrupted lawful residence of at least two years (Decree-Law 145/2024). The time limit for the issue of the nulla osta (clearance) has been extended to 150 days (Decree-Law 146/2025).
