Argentine procedures in Spain

Argentine citizens residing in Spain renew their passport and DNI at the Argentine consulate with jurisdiction over their place of residence. Tramite Italia prepares the documentation, obtains the consular appointment and follows the procedure through to the delivery of the documents.

Services provided by the Firm

The service includes verification of the documents, preparation of the application, the request for the appointment and follow-up until issue. Consular fees are paid directly to the consulate and are not included in the professional fees.

How the procedure works

• The competent consulate is the one for the consular district in which the applicant resides in Spain; some consulates require an up-to-date certificate of empadronamiento (municipal registration).
• The application must be submitted in person, since the consulate takes the applicant's fingerprints and signature at the appointment. Representation is not permitted.
• As a rule, the passport and the DNI may be applied for at the same appointment. The exception is where the DNI must first be updated, for example where it is still in the old booklet format or where the age-related update is overdue.
• The documents are produced in Argentina by RENAPER and must be collected in person at the consulate. Delivery times are set by the consulate and may be several months; the urgent procedures available in Argentina are not available abroad.

Documentation normally required

• Previous Argentine DNI and passport, even if expired, or a police report of theft or loss.
• Up-to-date certificate of empadronamiento, as proof of residence.
• Argentine birth certificate (partida de nacimiento), where the consulate requires it in order to update the applicant's details.

Other Argentine documents for use in Spain

• Criminal record certificate (Certificado de Antecedentes Penales): issued by the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia in electronic format, either online or with fingerprints taken at the consulate. For use in Spain, it must be apostilled online within 90 days of issue.
• Civil status records (birth and marriage partidas): requested from the Registro Civil of the province in which the record is registered, preferably in digital format with an electronic signature, and apostilled online.
• Since these documents are drawn up in Spanish, they do not require translation. The Spanish authorities may, however, require them to have been issued recently.

Spanish nationality

Argentine citizens may apply for Spanish nationality by residence after two years of legal and continuous residence in Spain, subject to passing the CCSE examination; they are exempt from the DELE language examination. The option provided for by the Ley de Memoria Democrática is no longer available: the deadline for applications closed in October 2025.
